14th Edition of MASA : First Lady Dominique Ouattara Inaugurates the Cultural Innovation Village

First Lady Dominique Ouattara presided over the inauguration ceremony for the Village of Innovation on Monday, April 13, 2022, held as part of the 14th edition of the African Performing Arts Market in Abidjan at the Abidjan Culture Centre.

The opening ceremony of this highly significant cultural event witnessed the participation of Ms. Françoise Remarck, Minister of Culture and Francophonie, as well as numerous other dignitaries.

In a speech marked with gratitude and commitment, the First Lady praised the major role played by MASA in promoting African performing arts. Indeed, addressing the artists, creators, technicians, and designers involved in this edition, the First Lady called them “the soul of the Innovation Village,” praising their talent and their contribution to the continent’s cultural vitality. “My greetings also go to all the artists, creators, dancers, designers, and technicians who have come together to bring this Innovation Village to life. You are the soul of this magnificent space we are visiting tonight. Congratulations on your respective talents,” said First Lady Dominique Ouattara.

Reflecting on the history of MASA, which was established in 1993 under the leadership of Professor Henriette Dagri Diabaté, then Minister of Culture, Ms. Dominique Ouattara noted that this market has become a true showcase for African creativity and a driver of economic development through the promotion of cultural and creative industries. “MASA has established itself as a showcase for African creativity and performing arts. This major event fosters connections between producers and artists, while also promoting cultural and creative industries as a driver of economic development for African countries. Over the course of fourteen editions, this versatile venue has made Abidjan an essential capital of the performing arts,” she emphasized. The First Lady also added: “Indeed, culture is no longer merely a form of entertainment; it is also, and above all, a source of unity and progress for peoples, to which we must pay particular attention.”

The Cultural Innovation Village : A New Chapter in the Evolution of MASA

The First Lady particularly emphasized the importance of the Innovation Village, presented as a new milestone in the evolution of MASA. This space, she explained, highlights the ability of local talent to integrate modern technologies and produce innovative artistic creations, while remaining true to African cultural roots. “ This year, MASA is taking a new step forward with the Village of Innovation. This installation is not merely an exhibition space; it is a living demonstration of the expertise of local talents, who are capable of reinventing themselves, engaging with today’s technologies, and fostering cultural creation that aims to be avant-garde,” emphasized Mrs. Dominique Ouattara.

Mrs. Dominique Ouattara also expressed her delight at the strong female participation in this year’s event—with 70 of the 120 groups led by women—as well as the continuation of the Henriette Dagri Diabate Award for Excellence.

Mr. Djibril Ouattara, Minister of Digital Transition and Digitalization and patron of the ceremony, welcomed the First Lady’s presence. For him, the First Lady’s presence is a sign that culture is at the heart of her social commitment. In his remarks, Minister Djibril Ouattara emphasized the link between culture and the digital realm. He highlighted that the cultural sector remains a major source of employment.

Ms. Habyba Thierno, Director General of ORUN, reiterated the importance of creating this cultural innovation village. For her, this village serves as an incubator for cultural innovation. In this context, on the occasion of the 14th edition of MASA, this village is intended to serve as a showcase. Finally, for her, innovation is not merely technological. It is both artistic and cultural.

The “Remix of Legends” fashion show, the highlight of the ceremony, embodied this vision by paying tribute to iconic figures of Ivorian music such as Ernesto Djedje, Alpha Blondy, DJ Arafat, and Magic System, while incorporating elements of contemporary fashion and creative technologies.
